Collages Darling

Oh My God, life…

When I open a fashion magazine, my eyes dilate, my heart races, and I have a moment when my adrenalin begins to rush. I love the glossy pages, the photo stories, the styling and of course the clothes. I also love writing. I especially love writing about the things that interest me most and I love that so many of you seem to enjoy reading this blog as much as I enjoy writing it. But sometimes, I like to process my thoughts about contemporary fashion culture differently. Lately I have been making a series of quick collages. I give myself some rules, because it is a way to process intuitive ideas and feelings. I give myself 15 minutes, and I am only allowed to use the magazine I am going through, and recently I have extended this rule to encompass the magazine I looked thought right before, as long as it stays within 15 minutes. I am trying to create an image that is in response to how I feel about the imagery used in the magazine. Given that I am in the process of obtaining my Master’s degree, I am heavy in the theory right now. But I’m interested in observing how the visual codes all around me affect me.

So…I gotta little glue, some glitter, and alllllll my fashion porn.

**so let it be known. All of the magazines used were available for purchase at a local bookstore. However, there is nudity, and sometimes the collages discuss adult themes. If you are unwilling to feel uncomfortable I wouldn't look at them. I encourage all of you to comment, however, use good judgement, and if you want to make one of your own, I'll post it!!!!!

darling collage #1:
I'll be tame at first, Something's Fishy
Images taken from Zink and a Chinese Fashion Magazine I don't know the name of published around 2008.

Rape Culture...

The image below is graphic. This collage was posted in correlation to my post about rape culture. You can find written information on the main page of my blog.

darling collage #2:
Hey Babe, You're Pretty
The images for this collage were taken from Zink, and a magazine I never found the name of. It had a graphic that was a big round circle. I only ever found it in a magazine shop in a suburb of Chicago, I have never seen it sold anywhere else, or any additional issues.

something a little lighter...
darling collage #3
rainbow-sparkle-voyer
Images taken from Zink. I promise not every collage is made from Zink magazines, but what can I say? It's a good magazine, one of my favorites, and sure enough, whenever I go on a magazine binge, Zink is always in my pile.
Ill even give you a link to their website:

Darling Collage #4
Afternoon-ish Delight
Happy middle of the week! I am currently living in a time warp where the days are about 2 minutes and the nights are 24 seconds. I honestly have no idea where I got the Images for this collage, if any of you recognize them, send me a message I'll post the information.

New, Pretty Things…

Sometimes we fall off or out of the wagon. I mean, it happens, and the hardest thing to do it to get going again. Applying the same rules, I got to cutting and gluing. To reiterate, all of the images I use are from fashion magazine I have purchased at a local bookstore. Im not interested in anything other that to see where the imagery takes me.

  1. Your collages look amazing! So I wanted to tell you, there was this girl in Sophomore review who was doing collages (just for fun) in her sketch book. She was very reserved about them and said she only did them for fun/for herself but they were beautiful! Very woman-centered/ feminist which is what she was trying to capture in her other work (mainly photographs)but just wasn't working. But anyways, I thought you could talk to her about them and get her interested in doing them for actual classes/her thesis work. I told her about taking a advanced drawing class ( i believe it's taught by Jenny Ulstick?). She's the girl who works at the DAAP cafe during our Tuesday evening class.

    1. Thank you so much! I never know what to think about any of the work I make, so it means alot to me that you enjoy them. Ill find her. It sounds like a good idea. We can look at other collage artists like Joseph Cornell or Mel Chin.
